After a wonderfully sunny Saturday, the same could not have been said about the Sunday.

The Show

This show was truly a show of two halves. Saturday was gloriously sunny for the most part, Sunday, not so much.

It started off dull, grey and not particularly warm. As the show went on it varied between rain, lots of rain, and more rain.

This time the show was opened by a flypast from some Lakenheath based F-15s (one of which was the 492nd heritage scheme). They were joined by the P-47, which followed with tight display (given the conditions) with the TF-51D Mustang.

The Typhoon came in next and from then on the flying order was largely the same as the day before, albeit with restricted displays.

Special credit must go to the wing walkers. I wouldn’t want to be up on the wings of a plane in the worst weather of the day!

The Photos

Whilst the light was a bit more predictable with there being no strong sun, rain brings it’s own set of problems.

Ironically, i don’t mind shooting against cloudy skies (as long as they are not flat grey) because it means a number of things. Firstly the planes stand out a bit more. They pop out of the sky and an vapour or smoke contrasts nice against the background. Secondly, fast jets and moisture means fluff!

I felt more comfortable with the camera having had 2 days warm up so I have a bunch of shots I am satisfied with. Here they are.

Final Thoughts

With the show over I packed up (in the rain) and headed for home. It feels sometimes like I am a rain magnet. Whenever I got to an air show, or air base, or air museum it’s raining.

That said, it’s hard to judge the weather in May so with the summer shows now coming full force it should improve.

One thing I will say is that this was by no means a classic Air Festival. It felt a bit light with some repeat performers. There wasn’t a lot going on in the hangars and it just felt a bit flat.

There were changes in how the event was organised, how the tickets were sold and the parking. All these in my view fell flat and from what I have heard from others has dented the shows reputation somewhat.

That’s it from this one. I was back a week later for Daks over Duxford. Keep an eye out for it.

Thanks for looking.
